Individual Note: PICKEL _ Jack Struthers October 24, 1924 - July 20, 2008 Jack Struthers Pickel passed away on July 20, 2008 at the age of 83 years. He is survived by his wife of fifty-two years, Audrey; his sons Allan and Douglas; granddaughters Zara and Zoey; grandson Adrian; daughters-in-law Tobe and Arlene; and nephews Michael and John Griner. Jack's main passions were family, petroleum geology, music, and golf. He adored his family and the role of grandfather was one of the highlights of his life. Jack was born on October 24, 1924 and grew up in North Battleford, Saskatchewan. Upon leaving the Air Force in 1944 he attended the University of Saskatchewan, graduating in 1949 with a BSc in Geological Engineering. A long and rewarding career as a geologist in the petroleum industry commenced upon joining Imperial Oil in 1949. He married Audrey in 1955, starting a family in 1957. Upon retiring from Esso in 1979 he started a second career as a respected consultant and teacher giving petroleum geology courses around the world. His passion for music led to becoming the first president of Jazz Calgary in 1972 and actively promoting jazz concerts in Calgary for the next several years. He loved playing ballads on the piano. Golf was a favourite way of unwinding and he regretted having to leave it later in life. A Celebration of Jack's Life will be held at CALGARY CREMATORIUM CHAPEL, 3219 - 4 Street N.W. (within the valley of Queen's Park Cemetery), on Friday, July 25, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Parkinson's Society of Southern Alberta, No. 102, 5636 Burbank Crescent S.E., Calgary, AB T2H 1Z6 (Telephone 403-243-9901, www.parkinsons-society.org ).
