2. Poem written By John Barge of Rugby England who had adopted Frank Mundye Wharton:
    "Little Frank and I"
a poem by Frank Mundye Barge's adopted father John Barge
I'm getting old and feeble now,
    And love my easy chair
When seated there I feel somehow
    Relief from toil and care.

When'er I place myself in it,
    One little form is near
Hand if in silence I would sit
    I may not linger there.

    A little curly headed boy
    That plays about my feet
His heart so light, so full of joy
    His little voice so sweet.

    When weary sometimes I recline
    There comes a fond appeal
His little hand so placed in mine
    It's gentle touch I feel.

And if no notice I would take
    Tis urged with childish force
His winsome ways I can't mistake
So I must yield of course.

He gets me down upon my knees
    To play with him bow-bow,
If I refuse my hand he'll seize
And stoops to show me how.

And if on the couch I sometime lay
And think to have a doze,
He comes to beckon me away
    Before mine eyes are closed.

He wants to ride upon my back
And say " come up Gee-gee"
Or up the chimmey calls for Jack
    Then laughs with childish glee.

If gloomy thoughts their shadows cast
    Upon my weary soul
It is not long these shadows last
    He'll chase them all away.

He does not know my eyes are dim
    That I am nearly blind,
And yet it seems to puzzle him,
If the place I cannot find.

He wants to make me understand
    And very hard he tries
He pats me with his little hand
    And looks into my eyes.

Or round my neck his arm enfolds
And bends my head to see
Although he's scarcely two years old
    He thus amuses me.

If aught disturbs his little mind
    And tears will sometimes flow
He comes to me and seeks to find
        ,
    Some solace for his woe.

His simple faith and trusting love
    Rebukes my anxious care
So I would go to One above
    And lose my sorrows there.

If sorrow comes or false alarms
    Or aught awakes his fears
He runs to my encircling arms
    And trusts for safety there.

Thus through the day he plays about
Nor seems to care for rest,
Till night comes on, when wearied out
He seeks it on my breast.

Then "Daddy" finds his little toes,
    And gives him loving kisses
Then off to bed content he goes
    To dream of future bliss.

Tis not my child, nor kith nor kin,
Yet he is dear to me
I think of one so much like him
And what he used to be.

A fair haired boy and curly too
    With lips so sweet
His sparkling eyes of azure blue
    And little pattering feet.

I think of his brief childish days
And what he used to be
    Of all his winning ways
And how I loved him too.

I think of what he may be now
    Among the seraph throng
In hole reverence there to bow
And join with them in song.

Before the throne of God above
    There with the children blest
In that bright peaceful home of love
    Forever there to rest.

And I am waiting here below
    To hear my Father's voice
Then to that home I too shall go
    And with the blest rejoice.

And then I hope someday to meet,
    This little Frank as well,
With him to sit at Jesus' feet
    His wonderous love to tell.
Copied March 29, 1958 by Clara Shute.

However our "Academy of book larning," being much above the average, the following pupils could not be spelled down in their respective classes: V-Maude Brooks, Maud Ruttan, IV-Allie Tylor, III Hughey Brooks, Lily Hogue, II-Ralph Miles, Aggie Hill, Ethel Brooks, Florence Goheen, Florence Ruttan.
