Charles Stuart's WW I Story

Charles was born 28 January 1897 at Sheffield, Yorkshire, England, the son of Charles and Kate Ellen (Hulley) Stuart.

On January 7, 1916 he enlisted in the 144th Overseas Battalion of the Canadian Expiditionary Force.

Service Record: After Training he sailed from Halifax on board the S.S. Olympic Sept 18, 1916. He went to France with 8th Battalion and was wounded in the right fore arm and arrived No.1 Casualty Clearing Station on August 5, 1917. On AUgust 9, 1917 he was transfered to No. 22 General Hospital, Camiers. On August 12 he was moved to No. 6 General Hospital, Camiers. On August 14, 1917 he was moved to No 2 Convalescent Depot in Royen. On September 10 he was discharged to Base Details.

He was wounded again on August 10, 1918 and was in 5 casualty clearing station with multiple injuries, where it was thought he was dead and he was placed among them. Luckily a Doctor saw him move. He was moved to 10 General in Rouen on August 21, 1918 and lists gun shot wound to scalp, right jaw fracture, hand and chest. He was moved to Queens Sidcup, Kent on September 6, 1918 listing same injuries. On May 10, 1919 he was moved to 16 Canadian General, Orpington and detailed the same injuries.

He was invalided to Canada on May 21, 1919 listing the same injuries. The record further shows he was transfered to Military Medical Hospitlal St. Anne de Bellevue, QC on June 1, 1919 with fractured right jaw. He was then moved to D.O.M.H. Toronto on December 1, 1919.

On April 10, 1920 he was granted leave to marry. On April 21, 1920 he married Willamina Hood Menzies in Toronto, Ontario.

He was discharged to D.D. 2 on June 4, 1920. On June 6, 1920 he was struck of service as medicaly unfit for further service. He was authorized to take further out patient treatment with Dept of S.C.R. and was entitled to 193 days in Winnipeg. On June 12, 1920 830501 Private, Stuart, Charles recieved his discharge papers at No. 2 District Depot in Toronto.

He was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

After his discharge He and Mina settled in Winnipeg, Manitoba and raised three children: Rae Kathleen , June Lillian Patricia and Charles.

He died 23 September 1977 in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
